UKIYO-E PROJECT
時代を映す浮世絵
浮世絵とは江戸時代前期から中期（1600年代中頃〜1700年代中頃）にかけて発達した日本の伝統工芸品、多色摺の木版画です。

その伝統は現代まで続いています。
江戸時代の浮世絵には、美人や歌舞伎役者、相撲力士、名所など、その時代の様々な風俗が描かれ、

当時の人々は浮世絵を通じて、ニュースやファッション、旅行などの情報を手に入れていました。
浮世絵はどのように作られていくのでしょう？
「絵師」「彫師」「摺師」三者の職人と、作品をプロデュースする「版元」、

この四者がそれぞれに工夫を凝らしながら作り上げていきます。

版元のプロデュース力や絵師の技量だけでなく、彫師、摺師の分業により、職人達の匠の技が凝縮された一種の総合芸術ともいえます。

300年以上の歴史に支えられたこの技法は、世界的にも類をみない日本独自の文化遺産です。

UKIYO-E PROJECTとは？
浮世絵の「浮世」は「今」「現代」という意味があり、各時代に人気のあった美人や歌舞伎役者、人気の観光スポット等を描いてきました。

UKIYO-E PROJECTは、その浮世絵のスタンスを現代にいかしたいという考えの基、

2014年三井悠加により発足された現代の版元であり、現代スターを伝統木版画で表現してきました。
これまでにKISS、アイアン・メイデン、デヴィッド・ボウイとコラボした浮世絵を制作し、

2020年には新たな風景画シリーズ『江戸のおもかげ』を発表。作品はロンドンの大英博物館、

ウィーンの応用美術博物館やマイアミ大学図書館等、世界各国で所蔵されています。

今後は２１世紀の環境と科学にフォーカスした新たなシリーズの制作を予定しています。

Ukiyo-e at CITAN - in the modern-day Nihonbashi

In the old days of Edo, Nihonbashi was both a starting point and a terminus for travel to and from other countries.
In other words, it was both a place of origin and a place of arrival of culture.
Many wholesale dealers of nishiki-e, the publishers of ukiyo-e, gathered in the area.
In addition, inns and innkeepers also lined the streets.

Saturday, October 8 - "Ukiyo-e at CITAN - in the modern-day Nihonbashi" will be held.

Autumn is full of bright autumn leaves and delicious food.
Soon it will be the season when you want to go somewhere on a trip!

As a special room for a limited time only, the “UKIYO-E PROJECT CONCEPT ROOM” will also make an appearance!

In the Edo period, Nihonbashi was the origin and destination of many cultures, also the place where a lot of culture originated and arrived.

UKIYO-E PROJECT —Ukiyo-e reflecting the times
Ukiyo-e is a traditional Japanese craft developed in the early to mid-Edo period (mid-1600s to mid-1700s).
The tradition has continued to the present day.
Ukiyo-e of the Edo period depicted various customs and manners of the time, including women, Kabuki actors, sumo wrestlers, and famous landmarks.
People at that time obtained information on news, fashion, travel, etc. through Ukiyoe.

How were Ukiyo-e produced?
There are three types of artisans: the painter, the engraver, and the printer, and the publisher, who produces the work.
Each of these four parties devises their own way to create the work.
It can be said to be a kind of comprehensive art in which the skills of the artisans are condensed not only through the production skills of the publisher and the skill of the painter, but also through the division of labor between the engraver and the printer.
This technique, supported by more than 300 years of history, is a unique Japanese cultural heritage unparalleled anywhere in the world.

What is the UKIYO-E PROJECT?
The "ukiyo" in Ukiyo-e means "now" or "contemporary”, and it has depicted popular beauties, Kabuki actors, popular tourist spots, etc. in each period of time.

UKIYO-E PROJECT was established by Yuka Mitsui in 2014 as a contemporary woodblock printmaking company with the idea of bringing the stance of Ukiyo-e to the modern age, and has been expressing contemporary stars in traditional woodblock prints.
So far, they have produced Ukiyo-e in collaboration with KISS, Iron Maiden, and David Bowie, and in 2020, they unveiled a new landscape “Edo no Omokage”. Their work has been exhibited at the British Museum in London, the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna, and the University of Miami, and many other museums around the world.
In the future, they plan to produce a new series focusing on the environment and science in the 21st century.
